Although standing on one foot and counting out loud may not seem like the most scientific way to determine whether a person’s ability to drive is impaired, that’s exactly what you’ll be asked to do if you are suspected of driving under the influence (DUI) in Oklahoma.

Grading the One-Leg Stand Test

The instructions for performing the one-leg stand test may seem simple: just move your foot about six inches off the ground, point your toe, look down, and count out loud for 30 seconds. However, there a number of factors that can affect your performance on the test.

While officers are trained to look for certain signs of impairment, there is not a specific scoring system in place when it comes to grading a one-leg stand test. Instead, it is solely up to the officer to decide whether you pass or fail. Unfortunately, since law enforcement officials must have a reason to suspect you are impaired in order to administer a one-leg stand test, the very fact that you are taking the test means that you are likely to fail.

As you are performing the one-leg stand test, the officer will watch closely to determine whether you show any signs of impairment. If you put your foot down, sway, hop, or attempt to use your arms for balance at any time, you can expect to be arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

Factors That Can Influence Your Test Results

Of course, even if you fail your one-leg stand test, you may be able to prevent your results from being used against you in court. Traffic conditions, lighting, weather, and other environmental factors can have a huge impact on your ability to successfully perform the test. In some cases, your age and/or medical history can even affect your test results as well.
