“Innocent Unless Proven Guilty?” or Someone Was Arrested So They Must Have Done Something Wrong?

Is the human tendency to believe the worst and trust the police to do a good job of investigating?

This article is a frightening example of why we are presumed innocent and remain innocent unless proven otherwise. The first statement by the police to Christopher was “Don’t act like you don’t know—so much for a detailed investigation. A simple selfie with his family was the only thing that saved this man from prison.

Also note, the woman involved was not immediately arrested once the truth came out. In fact not only has she not been arrested—her name is still being shielded even though she is under investigation for filing false reports. Her written statement had a man arrested, kept him from joining our military, almost sent him to prison but it was all an elaborate lie. Why is her identity being protected?

The greater question is: do you believe in “innocent unless proven guilty?” Could you apply this standard if called as a juror in a case similar to this one?
