Oklahoma’s Mandatory Point System

After a certain amount of points, or infractions, are accumulated on your driving record, it may be possible to have your driver’s license revoked. It is important to pay attention to the number of points (if any) you have already accumulated as it may impact your ability to drive.

Oklahoma’s Mandatory Point System

Oklahoma uses the Mandatory Point System to keep an eye on motorists and make sure that any reckless or careless drivers are held accountable for their actions. If you accumulate ten or more points within a five-year period, then your license will be suspended.

Points Given Per Infraction

There are several different ways you might accumulate points. Some of the most common include:

Four Points:

  • Reckless driving
  • Failure to stop or remain stopped for a school bus loading and unloading

Three Points: Speeding 25 mph or more over the posted limit

Two Points:

  • Violation of license restriction
  • Careless driving
  • Speeding
  • Following another vehicle too closely
  • Failure to obey a stop sign or traffic light
  • Failure to yield
  • Wrong way on a one-way street

One Point:

  • Operating a defective vehicle
  • All other violations

Getting Rid of Points

If you have no convictions for violations resulting in points over a 12-month period, then you will automatically get two points deducted from your record. If you receive no traffic violations for three consecutive years, then the points will be deducted to zero.

Taking certain approved driving courses can also help you get rid of points. Every time you complete a DPS-approved course, you will get a two-point deduction from your record. However, credit for completing the course can only be given once every 24 months.
