What Are My Chances of Winning or Getting My Domestic Violence Charges Dismissed or Reduced?
Facing domestic violence charges can feel overwhelming. You’re worried about your reputation and your future. You probably also want to know the chances of winning your case or having charges dropped. Each case is different, and many factors affect the outcome, including the opposing counsel, judge, jury, evidence, and witness testimony. Sometimes even the longest of longshot cases get completely dropped. There’s never a guaranteed outcome, so I tell all my clients to have hope and use a general rule to help them understand their prospects – the 20-60-20 rule.
What Is the 20-60-20 Rule?
I use this rule to break down your odds of winning. Generally, 20 percent of cases are so strong that I absolutely recommend going to court. The decision is always up to the client, but I advise in favor of going through with a trial. Inversely, 20 percent of cases will look unrealistic. That said, I encourage clients to weigh the risks. Some may want to go to trial anyway, depending on their situation. Each case is unique, and there are no guarantees.
The remaining 60 percent fall somewhere in the middle – neither textbook nor longshot. This is where an aggressive attorney can make a huge impact.
Without the counsel of an experienced attorney, it’s hard to determine where your case stands. We help our clients understand their chances and weigh the risks and benefits. At the Edge Law Firm, we scrutinize the prosecution’s strategy to search for cracks in their arguments and structure our defense. We empower our clients with that knowledge to make the best decision for them.

A Fighting Edge
Prepare for Success
We thoroughly prepare for each case we take on as though it will go to trial. Through diligence and planning, many never reach that point — that’s why we prepare as much as we do. When we’re better prepared than opposing counsel, our clients have a better chance of a successful outcome in their cases, including getting their charges dismissed or reduced.
How Storytelling Can Change Your Results
We start crafting your side of the story by genuinely listening. We spend time to hear all the details, collect witness testimony, and gather evidence. Then, we craft a compelling storyline that explains what happened from your perspective. The prosecution will try to undermine your credibility and tear you down, but we fight that agenda with a persuasive, compassionate narrative that paints you in the best light.
Defending Domestic Violence Charges
Defending domestic violence charges can be fraught with emotion, and you need a rock-solid defense strategy. As mentioned above, in most cases – 60 percent – your lawyer’s approach is the difference between prison and significant consequences. Some common ways to combat domestic violence charges include:
- Proving the accusations are false
- Demonstrating acts were self-defense
- Showing that the acts were accidental
Every case is different and requires an individualized defense. There are as many defense strategies as there are domestic violence cases.
