Oklahoma Merchant Marines and BUI/DUI
Operating a vehicle of any kind while intoxicated is against the law. While Driving Under the Influence or DUI is the most common type of arrest, the charge of Boating Under the Influence or BUI is also a serious crime—especially for those serving in the Merchant Marines.
Merchant Marines
The law does not require Mariners to report DUI or BUI arrests to the Coast Guard. However, the Coast Guard will usually discover the arrest when the mariner applies to renew his or her license, at which point they will look into the arrest and determine whether a probationary period is necessary.
The Coast Guard may also discover the arrest through third party sources such as the news, or a crime website. The Coast Guard will look at the circumstances of the arrest and the history of the accused and determine whether further action or a suspension of a license is necessary or logical.
