DUI Alcohol and Drug Substance Abuse Course

A DUI conviction carries a mandatory license suspension in Oklahoma. Before your driving privileges can be restored, you must complete a clinical assessment to determine whether you need to be treated for chemical dependency. Depending on the outcome of this assessment, you may also have to complete a DUI alcohol and drug substance abuse course before your license is reinstated.

Assessing Your Needs

Although it probably does not seem that way right now, clinical assessments are actually designed to benefit you—their sole purpose is to help you avoid being arrested for a subsequent DUI in the future. During the evaluation, you will meet with a licensed addiction specialist to go over your history of alcohol/drug use and your relationship with the substance(s).

You should be prepared to discuss a number of topics over the course of your assessment, including how your alcohol and/or drug use impacts your life and the lives of your loved ones as well as your reasons for using the substance(s). After identifying the key changes that need to be made in order for you to overcome your chemical dependency, your evaluator will refer you to the appropriate treatment program.

Types of Treatment

Since every driver’s experience with substance abuse is unique, there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to treatment. While some drivers may require a lengthy stay in rehabilitation and aftercare, others may experience success after just one therapy session—and if you’re like most people, you’ll probably fall somewhere in the middle. In these instances, enrolling in a risk reduction program, or DUI School, may be your best option.
